PURPOSE

I believe I was created, called and equipped to pursue shalom by influencing the influential with strategic vision, moxie, and intentionality. Below are some of the ways I am trying to live out my purpose.

PODCASTS

Ryan Hodges and me

Most people say works sucks. In fact, a 2022 Gallup survey found that only 1 in 3 of employees are engaged in their work, but 1 in 6 are actively disengaged. Here’s what’s really crazy - that isn’t just front line workers. Employees, managers, and leaders at every level are frustrated. We all work. Most of us work a lot. And we all agree work sucks. WHY?

I launched a podcast with my good friend Ryan Hodges to explore this topic and see what can be done to make work not suck.

Most type-A, high achieving executives run alone. And that’s not good. We were designed for community, and nobody needs community more than leaders. I have been blessed to be a part of a small group of guys who are choosing to do life together. We don’t live near each other. We don’t work for the same company. We are just a group of alphas who are choosing to run as a pack. This podcast is for anyone who longs for a community of leaders to encourage and challenge them.

PROFESSIONAL

I founded Steering Ventures in 2015 after gaining a wealth of experience from a variety of roles in the corporate world, including startups, mid-size companies and Fortune 500 corporations. In fact, I’ve held more job titles than anyone else I know, including (but not limited to):

Supply Chain Analyst

Implementation Analyst

Internal Auditor

Sr Manager of Strategic Planning

Chief of Staff

Director of Marketing Strategy

Director of New Product Development & Innovation

VP of Product Management

Chief Operations Officer

Chief Revenue Officer

Executive Director

Executive Coach

I have been very blessed with an interesting and varied career across multiple industries and organizations. But I’ve been bothered by several themes I’ve seen in company after company:

PERSONAL VS PROFESSIONAL

So many corporate professionals live disconnected lives. They are crushing it at the office but they are miserable at home, overweight, lonely and/or addicted. This is not my definition of winning. To succeed in life and in business, leaders must break the personal-professional barrier and begin treating themselves, and others, as complete human beings. Valuing the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical dimensions of every individual is a critical first step in developing a healthy and effective organization.

PROFIT VS PURPOSE

Walt Disney once said, “We make money so we can make movies; no the other way around.” Today most executives have it backwards. They are more focused on profits than purpose, and the impact is predictable: disengaged employees, turnover, and toxic cultures. Money can’t buy meaning, and today many executives need help discovering their personal and professional WHY.

CULTURE VS STRATEGY

I have lost count of the number of strategic projects I’ve seen that were destroyed by leadership and culture problems. Some of them are so tragic, they became actual Dilbert comics. Great companies are both healthy and effective because they have aligned their Vision, Journey, Culture and Results.

Today, in the work I do with mission-minded executives, I strive to help them overcome these and other challenges, so they and their businesses can flourish.

PERSONAL

Daniel, Victoria, Titus and Ransom

Flourishing is fickle and funny. Flourishing doesn’t mean you will get everything you want. Flourishing isn’t the absence of pain and suffering. In fact, I would argue that we can’t really flourish without pain and suffering, because it is only through struggle that we grow, mature, and evolve.

I work with mission-minded executives to help them and their organizations flourish. But I’m on that journey too.

  • My wife has several chronic health issues

  • We had a very difficult time having kids

  • My oldest son, Titus, has a mitochondrial disease … a rare genetic disorder that takes us to the Mayo Clinic regularly and will eventually take his life

  • My career path has been anything but linear and predictable

Yet I would say we are flourishing - not in spite of, but because of our struggles.

  • I love Crossfit

  • Victoria loves Barr and Pilates

  • Titus loves playing wheelchair basketball

  • Ransom loves soccer

  • We love to travel

  • We are actively involved at Perimeter Church in Johns Creek, Georgia

I am trying to balance the needs of my wife, my kids, my clients, and my spiritual/mental/emotional/physical health. I don’t have all the answers, but I know the struggle and I’ve been on this journey for a while.
